AMD Phenom II X4 810 & X3 720 Processors


A month ago we saw the launch of the Phenom II X4 940 & 920 processors. Today AMD is launching FIVE new chips to add to their Phenom II lineup. We are finally seeing the socket AM3 (DDR3) design that has been talked about for many months. Unfortunately, while the chips are ready for DDR3, motherboard manufacturers are still working diligently to get AM3 boards in the retail channels as soon as possible. However, these processors are designed to work in existing AM2+ motherboards requiring nothing more than a simple BIOS update. So whether building a new system or upgrading an existing one, these processors offer an inexpensive solution for the enthusiast that wants to get most performance out of their AM2+ system.

The two chips we will be taking a look at specifically are the Phenom II X4 810 and X3 720 Black Edition. Being a Black Edition processor means that the CPU multiplier is unlocked, making it much easier to overclock. The Northbridge Frequency (HT/MC) is back up and running at 2GHz for all these AM3 processors (The X4 940/920 are running at 1.8GHz). While the X3 7xx series have 6MB of L3 cache (just like the X4 9xx series), the X4 8xx processors have only 4MB of L3 cache.

In the picture below, the CPU on the left is the typical AM2+ processor, the one on the right is an AM3. Notice the omission of a couple pins? The corresponding AM3 sockets will have those holes filled to ensure a person doesn't try to insert an AM2+ processor into an AM3 board. Meanwhile, the AM3 chip will fit perfectly into an AM2+ board.

Target Market & Competition:

AMD is marketing these new Phenom II AM3 processors against Intel's mainstream / budget quad & dual core chips. Typically gamers like to buy the dual-core processors because there isn't much of an advantage using a quad core in games and that extra cash can be put towards a better video card. AMD has capitalized on the tri-core design, giving a little extra boost in performance over dual-core chips, but at a substantial cost savings over quad-core chips.

In the table below are the closest processors Intel has in price. You can certainly spend more for a faster processor, but here we are trying to show what kind of bang you get for your buck. For the Intel chips I just took the prices from Newegg (my favorite place to buy computer parts). Sometimes it's hard to make good comparison with so many different mixes of CPU speed, CPU cores, cache size, bus speed, etc... It can really start to make your head hurt if you think about it too much. Anyhow, you can see that the next jump in Intel chips is about $20-$25 more, which the price for a Q8300 would be better compared to a X4 920 (currently $189 at Newegg).

Test Setup, Methodology, and Benchmarks Used:

Too keep things consistent and try to maintain and "apples to apples" comparison, we try to use as much common hardware across the board. Since the Phenom II is still running only DDR2, we went with that for the comparative Intel systems. Each system's BIOS was set to "Optimized Defaults", with a verification of CPU & Memory speeds and timings.
We started out with a clean install of Vista and performed all the Windows updates to bring it up to current levels as of when this review was written. Then we installed all out benchmark programs and ran a disk defrag. Afterwards we disabled some un-needed Vista features that could affect results such as SuperFetch, System Restore, Defrag, Indexing, and Remote Assistance. Furthermore we ran the Bapco Auto-Configuration Tool and used its "Level 3" settings which disables a bunch more stuff:

* Disables screen saver
* Disables Windows Update
* Disables Desktop Cleanup Wizard
* Disables User Account Control (UAC)
* Disables the Sidebar
* Disables Windows Security Center warning messages
* Disables Windows Firewall
* Disables incoming Remote Desktop connections
* Disables Windows Error Reporting to Microsoft
* Prevents the Welcome Center from running at startup
* Disables Windows Defender

Each of the benchmarks were run at least five times, with the average being reported.

Everest CPU Queen's Problem:

This simple integer benchmark focuses on the branch prediction capabilities and the misprediction penalties of the CPU. It finds the solutions for the classic "Queens problem" on a 10 by 10 sized chessboard.

At the same clock speed theoretically the processor with the shorter pipeline and smaller misprediction penalties will attain higher benchmark scores. For example -- with HyperThreading disabled -- the Intel Northwood core processors get higher scores than the Intel Prescott core based ones due to the 20-step vs 31-step long pipeline. However, with enabled HyperThreading the picture is controversial, because due to architectural bottlenecks the Northwood core runs out of internal resources and slows down. Similarly, at the same clock speed AMD K8 class processors will be faster than AMD K7 ones due to the improved branch prediction capabilities of the K8 architecture.

CPU Queen test uses integer MMX, SSE2 and SSSE3 optimizations. It consumes less than 1 MB system memory and it is HyperThreading, multi-processor (SMP) and multi-core (CMP) aware.

Everest CPU PhotoWorxx Processing:

This integer benchmark performs different common tasks used during digital photo processing.

It performs the following tasks on a very large RGB image:

* Fill
* Flip
* Rotate90R (rotate 90 degrees CW)
* Rotate90L (rotate 90 degrees CCW)
* Random (fill the image with random coloured pixels)
* RGB2BW (color to black & white conversion)
* Difference
* Crop

This benchmark stresses the integer arithmetic and multiplication execution units of the CPU and also the memory subsystem. Due to the fact that this test performs high memory read/write traffic, it cannot effectively scale in situations where more than 2 processing threads used. For example, on a 8-way Pentium III Xeon system the 8 processing threads will be "fighting" over the memory, creating a serious bottleneck that would lead to as low scores as a 2-way or 4-way similar processor based system could achieve.

CPU PhotoWorxx test uses only the basic x86 instructions, and it is HyperThreading, multi-processor (SMP) and multi-core (CMP) aware.

Overclocking:

Since the Phenom II X3 720 chip is a Black Edition (unlocked multiplier), I simply used the AMD Overdrive tool to increase the multiplier and adjust the CPU voltage. The X4 810 has a locked multiplier, thus the only way to overclock it is to increase the HT reference clock. For air cooling I tried a Zalman CNPS-9700 and Scythe Infinity. Unfortunately because of some other unforeseen issues (not related to this review) I was not able to do as thorough of overclocking as I would have liked. Overall I'm quite pleased with the results, and they seem to be in the same ballpark as others.

Here's a breakdown of the numbers, all tests were done on air (as mentioned above):

Wi-Fi High


A local Washington DC television news station wanted to do a WiFi "hack." Their plan was to sit in a local coffee shop (named after the Pequod's first mate) and try to read their neighbors' e-mail or Web browsing. They had a simple question for me: "Is it legal?"

This raises a series of questions about how people are -- deliberately or accidentally -- breaking the law with WiFi. In fact, using someone else's wireless signal -- even if only to get Web access -- might constitute a felony. So could reading other people's cleartext communication, or even just putting an 802.11 wireless hub in your house.

Let's say you are sitting in Bryant Park behind the Astor Library (the one with the famous lions) with your Centrino-powered laptop -- just like in the advertisement. Forgetting the irony of accessing information from outside one of the best libraries in the world, you power up and your computer tells you that it has found a wireless connection. Are you now permitted to use this connection to access the Internet? We'll say there is no security on it. No userid, no password, no WEP key; just free Internet.

The answer has profound consequences for the ability of law enforcement to prosecute computer crime and trespass cases.

There is little doubt that when you "piggyback" the WiFi signal you are "accessing" -- or "using the resources of" -- the device that is providing the Internet connection. There's also little doubt that routers, access points and gateways are all computers within the meaning of federal law.

The U.S. federal computer crime statute, Title 18 U.S.C. 1030, makes it a crime to knowingly access a computer used in interstate or foreign communication "without authorization" and obtain any information from the computer. A separate provision makes it a crime to access a computer without authorization with "intent to defraud" to obtain "anything of value." Fortunately, this provision also specifies that it doesn't apply if "the object of the fraud and the thing obtained consists only of the use of the computer and the value of such use is not more than $ 5,000 in any 1-year period."

So if the government wanted to throw you in jail, it could argue that, by getting free Internet, you were accessing the provider's computer without authorization (and that you knew or should have known it was without authorization or in excess of authorization) and you thereby obtained some information from the computer. Sure, that statute was intended to go after data thieves. But the access necessarily shares some data -- IP, routing, etc -- between the computers, and the statute does not specify exactly what information must be obtained. That means you've potentially committed a felony.

But wait, you say, I didn't knowingly access the computer without authorization -- there was no security on it. How was I supposed to know that I wasn't allowed to access the WiFi connection? Here is the troublesome part: If you accept this argument -- that by broadcasting a connection you are inviting others to share it -- you end up on a slippery slope. How much security must you have on a system in order to be able to prosecute someone for accessing it without authorization?

From Access to Interception
In fact, the companion New York State computer crime law, NY Penal Code Section 156 (6), requires that, before you can be prosecuted for using a computer service without authorization, the government has to prove that the owner has given actual notice to potential hackers or trespassers, either in writing or orally. In the absence of such notice in New York, the hacker can presume that he or she has authorization to proceed, under state law.

This demonstrates that a lack of security not only can act as an invitation to access, but also may preclude a later prosecution for unauthorized access. If the access is "wide open" -- as in the WiFi connection in Bryant Park -- then how do you prove that the access is unauthorized?

So, we effectively blame the victim for not having enough security. If the door is open, I can come in. But what if it's not open, but is unlocked? Or if it is locked, but locked poorly? Can I still come in? The answer right now is simply that we do not know.

So simply getting the wireless connection may be a crime. But what about reading what is sent in the clear: your neighbor's browsing, e-mail, or even just IP information being "broadcast" throughout the coffee shop.

Both the Electronic Communications Privacy Act and the federal Wiretap Law make it a crime to "intercept" communications "in transmission." Although it has an exception for capturing broadcast communications, this only applies to the interception of a satellite transmission that is not encrypted or scrambled and that is transmitted to a broadcasting station for purposes of retransmission to the general public. Thus, by reading e-mail, or even just DHCP or ARP packets, you are potentially violating that law.

All in all, electronically examining packets traveling through the air is probably a crime, just as intentionally listening to someone's cell phone or cordless phone calls is a crime -- even if unencrypted and broadcast in the air.

The Access Point Felony
Even putting up an unencrypted, unprotected wireless access point might conceivably get you in trouble. Let's say that it's a nice day out, and you want to sit in Riverside park on the Upper West Side and enjoy the day. So you plug your Linksys 802.11(g) access point into your cable modem, and sit outside.

You're busted! You see, when you "broadcast" the cable connection, you are opening it up for anyone to potentially use it. So other people can potentially get Internet access from Comcast without paying for it. In Maryland, for example, it is illegal to use an "unlawful telecommunication device" which is a "device, technology, [or] product . . used to provide the unauthorized . . . transmission of . . access to, or acquisition of a telecommunication service provided by a telecommunication service provider." Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Virginia and Wyoming all have laws on the books that may do the same thing.

These laws generally treat "sharing" of Internet connections the same way it would treat "sharing" of Cable TV or Satellite TV services. Thus, while you could invite your neighbors in to watch the latest episode of The Sopranos, you probably couldn't hook a coax into apartment 3B so they could watch from home -- at least without getting the permission of the cable TV company.

You can see this in, for example, Verizon's personal DSL agreement, which states that "[y]ou may not resell the DSL Service, use it for high-volume purposes, or engage in similar activities that constitute resale (commercial or non-commercial), as determined solely by Verizon." So, if Verizon determines that your 802.11 connection constitutes a non-commercial resale (and is unauthorized) not only can it cut you off, but it can make you a felon.

All of this means that the simple act of driving around and getting WiFi connections as needed, something we hope to be able to do (isn't that why we bought the Centrino in the first place?), is fraught with legal risk. One way to counter this is to establish more universal wireless access agreements (like we did with the first cell communications) so we can pay a single fee and move from WAP to WAP freely.

But ultimately if we want to move to ubiquitous wireless computing, where you can use the WiFi protocols for cheap, mobile VOIP communications, or have near universal wireless Internet access, we are going to have to persuade the law to get the hell out of the way

ASUS P5Q3 Deluxe/WiFi-AP@n Mainboard

As you know, hunt for maximum performance can never end. It is like a sport without any limits for perfection. You can constantly replace computer hardware components with new ones with higher speeds and new features. This is what keeps the business of many computer hardware companies going. New processors, graphics cards and other types of components with significant internal or superficial cosmetic improvements keep coming out regularly.

Nevertheless, small islands of stability sometimes shape up in the middle of these never stopping changes. For example, take the system chipsets for LGA775 platform following the launch of Intel P35. Although this solution was introduced more than a year ago it is still not outdated. The Intel X38 and X48 that followed P35 later on improved its functionality just a little bit, but failed to turn into a solid alternative to it from the price to functionality standpoint. And as for Nvidia’s attempt to strengthen their positions in the LGA775 chipset market, it inevitably produced a new series of specific niche products, nothing else. In other words, it is completely logical that Intel P35 remains the most widely spread platform until today. It features a universal high-performance memory controller, supports all contemporary processors, offers a sufficient number of external interfaces. Of course, it lacks the PCI Express version 2.0 support, however, this feature is not of crucial value for contemporary graphics accelerators.

However, even though the situation in the chipset market seems great, Intel still decided to refresh their top offering. Now they try to replace the successful P35 with a new P45. The first mainboards based on this chipset have already started to appear in stores. We cannot really praise the new Intel P45 chipset. It is not a revolutionary solution, has no evident advantages over the predecessors, and doesn’t promise to set new performance records. In fact, it is a second modification of the good old P35, which is actually a definite advantage of the newcomer. From the functional standpoint, the new core logic set now supports PCI Express 2.0 and has a new South Bridge that differs just a little bit from the usual ICH9.

However, Intel P45 still has a few features that will definitely be of interest to computer enthusiasts. Namely, P45 is the last chipset for LGA775 platform; Intel will not introduce anything new for the Core 2 processor family. Now they put all their engineering efforts into the upcoming Nehalem platform. However, since they will only come to the mainstream market in mid 2009 at the earliest, P45 will have a pretty long life span. In this respect, it would be correct to say hat Intel P45 accumulated all the best Intel has ever put into its chipsets for CPUs with Core micro-architecture. Moreover, Intel P45 is manufactured with a more advanced 65nm technology, unlike its predecessors. So, overclocking fans hope new chipset will help them hit new overclocking heights.

Of course, Intel P45 deserves a separate discussion. However, we didn’t dare talk about it yet, although we had quite a few mainboard samples on this new chipset sitting in our lab for quite some time now. The thing is that all the samples we have received so far were hardly close to mass production and suffered fro a number of problems that they shouldn’t have had. That is why we decided to wait until mass production mainboards appeared that could give us a complete picture of what the new Intel chipset is actually like. We finally received a mass production ASUS mainboard on Intel P45 chipset - ASUS P5Q3 Deluxe.

The ASUS P5Q3 Deluxe is strikingly similar to the ASUS P5E3 Premium in both layout and specification. Worth noting is that the P5Q3 Deluxe will be bundled for sale with ASUS' WiFi-AP@n wireless Draft-N controller. We really like the idea of including useful features such as these onboard but would really like to see ASUS ditch the USB-connect interface for something a little more modern, like a PCI Express x1 link.

An Analog Devices AD2000BX 8-channel HD CODEC provides onboard audio. Although we do not have much information about this new controller as of yet we can tell you that our initial listening impressions leave us feeling that It's a notch above the ADI1988B Audio CODEC that ASUS has been extensively utilizing for the past two years.

The crowd of readers that constantly complain about the lack of Firewire-800 support will have no reason to change their tune - up to two 1394a ports, one on the back panel and one via an optional header, are provide by a single Agere/LSI L-FW3227-100 IEEE 1394a Firewire-400 controller. When asked why no current motherboard supported the newer Firewire-800 standard, ASUS representatives commented that the cost of the controller was excessive when first introduced but admitted that the price should have substantially dropped over the years and resolved to see what could be done for future boards.

The P5Q3 also includes the latest and greatest Express Gate module, which allows quick pre-boot access to digital content stored on a USB drive or other attached media, near instant access to the internet and communications programs like Skype, and the ability to play simple games regardless of the OS installed (including the lack of any main system drive). This environment is built using a highly-optimized, low footprint Linux kernel and is upgradable - meaning as new features are released they can be added to the system at no additional cost.

The back panel contains a pretty standard array of connection I/O ports. There is a PS/2 port capable of supporting either a single keyboard or mouse, two SPDIF audio ports (one digital Coax, one optical), analog speakers outputs including line-in, six USB 2.0 ports, two RJ-45 1Gbps Ethernet ports, one eSATA port, and a single 1394a (Firewire-400) port.

Samsung Q1EX


Samsung is officially ready to unveil its update to its Q1 Ultra. The Q1EX-71G features quite a few interesting changes, the biggest being its new Via Nano processor and keyboardless design.

Measuring 8.96 x 4.92 x 0.90 inches the 1.5 pound UMPC (or Mobile Internet Device?) sports a 1024 x 600 7-inch touchscreen display with a on-screen keyboard. The previous Q1 had a physical keyboard which straddled both sides of the screen.

Powered by a 1.2Ghz Via Nano U2500 processor and 2GB of RAM the Q1EX runs Windows XP Tablet Edition and contains a 60GB hard drive. The $749 Q1Ex will sport 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, 1.3 megapixel cam and is rated to have 4.5 hours of battery life with the standard 4-cell battery and up to 8.5 hours with the 6-cell battery.

According to Samsung additional accessories will be available, including a docking station that includes touch pad keyboard, mouse button, and VGA and LAN ports.

First spotted at this year’s CES, Samsung’s Q1EX-71G UMPC is ditching its original split QWERTY keyboard for a full 7-inch, touchscreen display with 1,024 x 600 pixel resolution, according to Samsung.

The device uses Microsoft Windows XP Tablet Edition running on a 1.2GHz VIA Nano ULV U2500 processor and flanked by VIA’s Chrome9 HC graphics, 2GB of 667MHz DDR2 memory, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, a SiRF Star GPS receiver, SD card slot, and a rear-mounted camera of unspecified pixel density.

The unit, which Engadget says recently passed through the FCC for approval, also features a 60GB hard disk and a 4-cell, 4,000mAh lithium ion battery for up to 4.5-hours of battery life, according to Samsung.

No price or release date has been set, but one online retailer has already stickered the device with a sub-$800 price tag.

Samsung has just pulled the covers off the Samsung Q1EX tablet, a refresh of the Samsung Q1 touchscreen UMPC from a few years ago. It looks lovely, but there’s a lot more competition this time around: it’ll have to take on the entire netbook market.

The Samsung Q1EX tablet, the “next generation UMPC”, has just been put up for pre-order on the Samsung US site and it’s got specs to match the Eee PCs and MSI Wind, undisputed champions of the new netbook world.

Inside the Samsung Q1EX tablet there’s a 7 inch, 1024×600 touchscreen, Windows XP, a 1.2GHz processor, 60GB HDD, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a 4.5 hour battery. The Samsung Q1EX tablet is also rumoured to tote GPS, although Samsung has yet to confirm this.

The next model in Samsung’s UMPC range, the Samsung NP-Q1EX, has been revealed, after the 7-inch touchscreen device was spotted at the FCC. Dropping the QWERTY thumb-board from the Q1 Ultra, the Q1EX gets a slimmed-down casing, VIA’s 1.2GHz Nano ULV U2500 processor and Chrome9 HC graphics, 2GB of 667MHz DDR2 RAM and an integrated SiRF Star GPS receiver.

Other specs include WiFi b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, a 3-in-1 memory card slot and a 1.3-megapixel rear camera. Based on the Samsung Q1EX that hit the FCC, it looks as though the 1024 x 600 UMPC will have a 60GB hard-drive and a 4-cell, 4,000mAh lithium ion battery that according to Samsung will be good for up to 4.5hrs runtime.

The Samsung NP-Q1EX-FA01US is already up for pre-order with Windows XP Tablet Edition, priced at $775.99. Given that the company’s UMPCs used to cost in excess of $1,000, that seems almost a bargain. No sign of a release date, but given the amount of information on Samsung’s site we’d presume it’s coming soon.

Acer 9-inch


DigiTimes reports that Acer is considering discontinuing the Acer Aspire One 8.9-inch netbook when the 10.1-inch model debuts. This move would make a lot of sense considering that a 10-inch netbook is considered ideal by many users.

If Acer does stop producing and shipping the 8.9-inch version of the One, it would jive with the story earlier this week where reports had the 10-inch version carrying the same MSRP as the current 9-inch netbook.

Acer is much more likely to sell a 10-inch model than the smaller screen version, especially at the same price tag. DigiTimes reports that if the 8.9-inch version were discontinued, the computer company hardest hit would be Quanta Computer.

Quanta has outstanding orders for 8.9-inch models. However, according to sources, Quanta would get additional shipments of the 10-inch version to make up for 8.9-inch orders that go unfulfilled. With the smaller Aspire One grabbing the top netbook title, the 10-inch version should help it hold onto the title, especially with the track pad buttons in proper locations.

Previously on As The Battery Life Turns, we tested the battery that came with our review unit of the Acer Aspire One 10-inch and got a result of 7 hours and 57 minutes, which blew away every other netbook battery out there. This was due not only to the number of cells in the battery (6) but the high capacity of the cells (5800-mAh/milliamp-hours).

Oh, but wait.

We then discovered that the Aspire One was supposed to ship with a lower capacity battery — still six cells, but only 4400-mAh. The better battery will only come with the first batch of Aspire Ones, so customers that pre-ordered them may get lucky. Everyone else will get the “normal” battery.

This week we were finally able to test the 4400-mAh battery most Aspire Ones will come with. We previously predicted that it would get between 4.5 and 5.5 hours. The result?

Yes, it is a bit disappointing, but 4:24 is still decent, particularly for a $350 netbook. However, for $50 more you can buy the Eee PC 1000HE that gets more than 7 hours (and has a much improved keyboard).

Intel’s X48 chipset has been a bit of an enigma in the industry since its launch, which definitely could be described as “under the radar.” As a follow-on to Intel’s X38 chipset that ushered the first PCI-E 2.0 motherboards, analysts and industry insiders didn't know what to make of the new high-end chipset. After all, according to Intel, the only major addition to the X38 chipset was that this new chipset would offer official support for 1,600MHz DDR3 memory and a 1,600MHz FSB. But was there more to the story?

In short, no. There isn’t much more to know about the X48 chipset beyond its ability to handle higher bus and memory speeds. The Intel X48 chipset is basically a “binned”-out screening of the X38. Think of these chips as the cream of the X38 crop, now dubbed X48. The first X48 motherboard to hit our test bench was the Asus P5E3 Premium. Asus was good enough not to play games with the model branding; the P5E3 Premium is a higher-end version of its P5E3 Deluxe X38-based board, but based on the X48 chipset. In fact, you can’t tell these two boards apart side-by-side, except for the silkscreened model numbers on their PCBs.

In addition to its two PEG slots and the ability to run AMD CrossFire graphics in dual-x16 mode, the P5E3 Premium also has a third full-length PCI-E x16 slot that will also run up to an x4 connection. There are also two more PCI-E x1 slots, two standard PCI slots, and just about every I/O option you could want, including six SATA 3Gbps ports, one UDMA port, two external eSATA ports, dual Gigabit LAN, 8-channel HD audio, optional Asus Wi-Fi AP, 12 USB ports, and two FireWire ports. Common to all Asus P5E series boards, this new premium board also comes equipped with what Asus calls an EPU (Energy Processing Unit). Essentially this is a digital voltage regulator and controller that adjusts the VRM circuit of the board from 4-phase to 8-phase, depending on load, thus improving efficiency of the array and CPU power savings features.

Speaking of loading, in our extensive testing of this board, we worked with the board's dividers (both CPU and memory) and bus speeds to see how far we could push the chipset. We were able to hit a bus speed of 528MHz, although we had to dial back our CPU multiplier to 6X so the processor remained stable. This motherboard proved itself to be one of the most stable we’ve seen in a long time under heavy overclocking loads. Asus actually reports that higher FSBs are attainable with dual core CPUs, but we were testing with a quad-core Core 2 Extreme QX9650.

The P5E3 Premium incorporates just about any setting you could want in its BIOS. In the “Extreme Tweaker” section, users can change clock frequencies and voltages for virtually every major chipset, CPU, or memory subsystem component. The CPU and PCI-E frequencies can be set in 1MHz increments. CPU multiplier and memory ratios are also adjustable. There are also numerous voltage options for the CPU, memory, chipset, and system timing PLLs. But perhaps the most interesting aspect for some will be that the BIOS lets users key in voltages and frequencies directly, without drilling down through menu options.

The P5E3’s overall performance was on par with other X38 chipset boards we’ve tested, except when we overclocked it to extremely high bus and memory speeds, where the little extra margin that the X48 brings can pay off slightly. Simply put, the P5E3 Premium takes advantage of what the new Intel X48 chipset has to offer and then some
